Douglas Thiel’s “Forgiveness: Another Philosophy Novel” Will Be Exhibited at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2025

Forgiveness follows the turbulent life of a Kentucky teenager who was falsely accused of a sex crime by his disturbed father in 1967 and released without arrest. After serving in Vietnam, he joins the LAPD, entering a series of intense, morally complex situations that ultimately propel him toward obtaining a master’s degree in philosophy. As he moves from the wall of birth towards the wall of death, he marries a female police officer and looks forward to life after the LAPD as a community college instructor.

Along the way he forms a bond with his philosophy professor and reconnects with a long-ago iconic Vietnam veteran he had served with at the An Hoa combat base. As he continues to seek reconciliation with his estranged family, the protagonist’s story becomes a deeply personal exploration of what it means to forgive – others, the world, and ultimately oneself.
